The Bull's Eye: May 22, 2017

We’ll be doing things a little differently this summer. Between summer schedules and our growing focus on the upcoming City Council & Mayoral elections, we’ll scale back the content in the Bull’s Eye emails. We’ll send the emails when there are pertinent updates and calls to action, but it may not be every week.

2 ways to engage with PA & Account-a-bull Teams:

People's Alliance and Durham 4 All are co-hosting our 3rd Activist Academy - Tools to Win Power for a More Progressive Durham!
Saturday, June 10 from 10am-4pm in downtown Durham
Learn about Durham's political history; power-mapping current organizations and players; grassroot organizing; volunteer management; media and 'telling your story'; and campaign management & finances. Space is limited - Apply online.

Are you overwhelmed by the news out of DC but want to find a way to engage with local resistance efforts? Help shape our PA Indivisibull action plan! We’re considering focusing on 3 key areas in the coming months: Health Care, a “Do your job Richard Burr” campaign, and Gerrymandering. We’ve begun an action plan for engaging on these issues but we need your input and more folks involved to make it happen! Contact us at indivisibull@gmail.com if you’re interested in learning more.

(1) Action-a-bull: (things to take action on)

School Board

  • Tuesday from 7-9pm: Attend the PA Education team meeting to discuss the DPS Superintendent search and BOE Budget Proposal. Address and RSVP online.

Members of Congress
We’ve all been inundated with news about the investigation into Russia’s interference with our election. The PA Indivisibull team has 2 quick summaries of the most relevant information to guide our action: why a special counsel is not enough and what we should expect of Senator Burr as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Two actions you can take this week:

  • WednesdayKeep the pressure on Senator Burr - call and tell him you expect him to lead a thorough Russia investigation.

    • Burr’s DC office, (202) 224-3154 - Call script: Hello, I’m a North Carolina voter from (Zip Code), and I’m concerned about the status of the Russia Investigation. Senator Burr needs to do his job in the Senate Intelligence Committee and demand more resources for the investigation. He also needs to use his subpoena power to the fullest extent regarding Trump’s firing of James Comey.

  • ThursdayCall Representatives Price (202.225.1784) and Butterfield ((202) 225-3101) to thank them for supporting bringing to vote an independent special commission (details here).

Mark your calendar - June 3: The March For Truth in Raleigh (this is a nationwide effort)

(2) Note-a-bull (things to be aware of)

We’ve got an important local election coming up this fall! People’s Alliance is working on lots of great stuff to educate and engage Durham to elect progressives to City Council and Mayor. Here are a couple of people from the City Council Account-a-bull team doing the glamorous work this weekend of researching split votes which will go into creating a Progressive Scorecard - coming soon!

Are you jealous of how much fun this looks like and want to join us in nerding out on local politics? Email us (maganthigpen@gmail.com) to get involved with the City Council team - there’s lots of work and fun to be had as we gear up for the elections!
